Hello Dollies

by
Cindy

When we talked about making something coconut, I immediately thought of this recipe and claimed it quickly.  The Hello Dollies recipe is the first recipe that I wrote out on a recipe card.  I have added a picture of the cookbook that my Girl Scout Troop made in 1966 when I first wrote it out to take to Girl Scouts.  These chocolate, coconut bars were one of my favorite things to eat and they were easy enough for an 8 year old to make.  This recipe is still going strong now and is also known as 7 Layer Bars.  I believe that this recipe was published is several places after the musical "Hello Dolly" came out and that's the origin of the name.  I followed my recipe from the Girl Scout Cookbook and it is truly one of the easiest bars to make.  They are delicious and we have enjoyed them at the office.

All mixing for this chewy bar is done in a 9 x 13 x 2 inch pan.  Melt one stick of butter in pan.  Add in this order:
2 cups graham cracker crumbs
(mix together and pat down lightly on bottom of pan)
12 oz. pkg chocolate chips (it's a lot so if you don't have to use this much)
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup flaked coconut
1 can sweetened condensed milk
1 t. vanilla

Bake for 25 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
